The holiday break is a special time of year. Routines slow down, families come together, and many players take a step back from the busy hockey schedule. For athletes at any stage of development, taking a break is healthy and important. Rest supports growth, protects against burnout, and helps players return in January feeling energized and excited to play again.

The goal during the holidays is not to train harder or fill every day with structured work. It is about enjoying time with family, keeping the body moving in fun and simple ways, and if there is ice available, making the most of it. Some teams will continue practicing during the break, and that can be a great opportunity to stay connected to teammates, enjoy being on the ice, and keep skills sharp. For others, time away from the rink is exactly what they need. Both paths are valuable.

Here are a few balanced ideas for staying active over the holidays without turning the break into another high pressure schedule.

Enjoy Time Outside

Skating on a pond, playing street hockey, sledding, skiing, or simply going for a walk with family all help develop balance, coordination, and conditioning. The most important thing is to have fun and play.

Make the Most of Any Ice Time

If your team has practices scheduled or if you have access to ice, enjoy it. A relaxed skate, 3 on 3 with friends, or a fun skills session can help keep the game feeling fresh. Training does not need to be intense to be valuable.

Stickhandling or Shooting for a Few Minutes

If players want to stay connected to the puck, ten minutes with a stickhandling ball or a few shots at home is plenty. Make it a game or challenge someone in the family to keep it fun.

Watch the Game Together

World Juniors. Need we say more?

Watching a game can be a great way to learn without doing any physical training. Pick a player to follow, talk about good plays, or just enjoy cheering together.

Celebrate Rest

Sleep, downtime, and mental recovery are as important as any drill. Taking a break helps the body recharge and keeps the game exciting rather than exhausting.

Move a Little Every Day

Stretching, balance challenges, strength exercises, or a quick outdoor activity keeps the body loose and ready for the second half of the season.

The Heart of It All: Enjoy the Break

The holidays are meant to be fun. Spend time with family, play outside, enjoy the food and traditions, and let hockey be something that brings joy, not pressure.

A balanced break leaves players refreshed, motivated, and excited to get back on the ice. Real development happens across months and years, not in one week.

Champions Hockey wishes everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable holiday season. We look forward to seeing you back at the rink with energy and excitement!
