Tryout season is almost here. Soon, teams will be picked, and a few players will be chosen to wear a “C” or an “A” on their jersey. For those players, it’s a huge honour that comes with the job of setting the tone, leading by example, and keeping the team connected.
But here’s the thing: leadership in hockey isn’t just about the players with letters.
For the Players Who Get a Letter
If you’re chosen as captain or alternate, your coaches see more than your skills. They see the way you work, how you treat people, and the influence you have on your team. Wearing a letter means:
Be the example in effort, attitude, and respect.
Be the connector by helping your teammates and coaches stay on the same page.
Lift others up because the best leaders make everyone around them better
For the Players Without a Letter
Not getting a letter doesn’t mean you aren’t a leader. It just means your leadership might show up in different ways. Every team needs people who lead by their actions, their energy, and their consistency.
Bring the spark since energy in practice and games can change the whole vibe.
Lead in your way by encouraging teammates, working hard, and being dependable.
Earn respect daily by showing up prepared and putting the team first.
Why It All Matters
A team’s success doesn’t come from three players with letters. It comes from the entire group taking ownership. The more leadership there is throughout the lineup, the stronger the team will be.
As we head into tryouts, remember:
Your value isn’t defined by what’s stitched on your jersey.
The way you show up on and off the ice can inspire your teammates more than you realize.
Leaders aren’t just appointed. They step up when it counts.
This season, whether you have a letter on your chest or not, you have the chance to make a difference.
